Setting up vonage in india - 3

  • Change the BSNL modem configuration so that its 'Always On':

Thats the terminology used by BSNL. What this means is you have to setup the modem so that you dont have to initiate the internet connection every time from your desktop to connect to the internet(by double clicking on the connect icon- entering your username and password). You have to store this username and password in the modem itself.

  • Why should I do this:

This is because you would eventually be connecting the phone to this modem (through the vonage router) and there is no way the phone can initiate the connection (when we pick up the receiver)

  • How to change to 'Always On':

With your existing setup (computer-> BSNL modem) login to the modem home page(mostly its http://192.168.1.0). Change the settings to PPPoE and enter the username/password of your DSL connection. Also change the settings to DHCP.

  • Connect the Vonage Router:

Connect the vonage router in the following way - Incoming phone line --> BSNL modem --> Vonage router --> Computer

  • Change the computer settings to DHCP:

Make sure that the computer has DHCP settings enabled. Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Right click on the connection --> TCP/IP --> Properties --> Obtain IP address automatically

  • Restart the computer, router and modem in that order and you are all set !!

Also remember the following:
  • Since making calls/receiving calls on vonage translates to downloading/uploading data using your DSL connection, make sure you have enough download/upload capacity on the DSL plan. Choose the appropriate connection otherwise you might end up paying a lot. (Tariff page for BSNL BSNL Tariff)
